Between skyrocketing prices, the scarcity of affordable housing, and the growing desire to live differently, many find themselves looking for solutions off the beaten track. Fortunately, there’s no shortage of ideas. Here are a few ideas for creative, sometimes even collaborative, housing solutions without breaking the bank.

Creating independent living within a primary residence—whether an entire floor, a wing of the house, or a space with its private entrance—this strategy makes it possible to accommodate a close relative while maintaining everyone’s privacy. This approach encourages mutual support between generations without imposing complete cohabitation. For seniors, it’s a way of staying close to their family while preserving their autonomy. It’s an affordable and compassionate solution for young adults or single parents. And for homeowners, it can also become a financial lever or a response to the housing crisis.

In the post-pandemic context, food autonomy is gaining interest among Quebec households. A greenhouse adjacent to the house offers several advantages by raising the quality of life of its occupants. This installation has several functions: productive in terms of food by providing healthy and ecological foods daily; educational on the notions of gardening for young and old; unifying by uniting the members of the family around a shared and collaborative project; and extensive in terms of extending the habitable living space of the house!

This versatile growing space can also combine a veranda offering a pleasant space for meals with family or friends, a living room for reading or chatting, and a sanctuary for contemplation or meditation. This microclimate, in terms of temperature and humidity, creates a unique atmosphere in both winter and summer.

A few parameters need verification before embarking on the construction of a greenhouse. It is required to verify municipal bylaws to ensure this construction is permitted and meets all municipal regulations. Ideally, the greenhouse should be located on the south side of the house to benefit from maximum hours of sunlight. The vegetation, deciduous trees in summer, and conifers must not create a shady area blocking the passage of light through the greenhouse. It may be wise to follow training from recognized organizations for designing and building this project or contact professionals specializing in ecological housing.

It can be a good idea to plan a greenhouse project adjacent to the house right from the start of a construction project to ensure that the essential elements are well-planned, including the foundations and preparation of the exterior wall to receive the structure. The La Grive project chose this strategy to introduce this element to the program right from the start of planning the construction project. Therefore, the greenhouse can be annexed as soon as the budget is available, thus spreading out the construction costs associated with this project over time while not putting the dream of having a greenhouse adjacent to the house on hold!

People often ask me this complex question. There are several possible avenues to answer it. However, I will focus on the most elemental approach easily applicable when undertaking a construction project: source reduction.

This strategy is adopted at the very first stage of the construction project when the housing program is defined. What are the real needs of the household lifestyle? How much floor space is needed to meet these specific needs?

The ideal solution is to minimize the home’s footprint to limit any disruption to the immediate environment and its volume to reduce the quantity of materials required to build it. It is also a priority to validate whether spaces can be multipurpose. Can they serve different functions at different times without multiplying them?

An important task often goes under the radar at this crucial stage of defining needs. It involves taking inventory of your material assets and asking yourself whether it is necessary to keep all these objects. Couldn’t a non-profit organization, friends, or relatives benefit from them if they are unused? Minimalism allows us to reduce storage space in favor of the living spaces shared with our loved ones in our daily lives and where we create meaningful memories.

The consequent result of minimizing the building, material assets, and budget of one’s home reflects an environmentally conscious behavior and leads to greater freedom. This freed-up time and budget can undoubtedly be used in other ways, according to each household’s priorities, whether in a more enriching social life or a more committed involvement in the community.

Have a sound reflection!

The specific climatic context of Quebec, in which we live and enjoy four very distinct seasons, requires an adapted design of our houses. The passive solar design makes it possible to take advantage of the sun’s path according to the seasons by carefully planning the orientation of the house.

First, the sun’s path changes throughout the year. In winter the sun is lower in the sky, while in summer it is higher. The sun’s rays therefore enter the house more directly in winter, reducing the need for heating. The La Mésange project maximizes this phenomenon by applying the principles of passive solar design. The shape of the house stretches due south to make the most of the light and solar gain in winter thanks to abundant windows and a concrete slab, a thermal mass that stores heat during the day and diffuses it at night, thus improving occupant comfort.

As mentioned earlier, since the sun is higher in the sky in summer, the principle of passive solar design is to limit the entry of sunlight. Thus, the abundant windows of the La Mésange project are protected from the sun’s rays in summer by a strip of deciduous trees on the south side of the house. In winter, these deciduous trees, stripped of their leaves, play the opposite role, that is, they let in the sun’s rays. The concrete slab, cooler in summer than the ambient air since it is shielded from direct sunlight, acts as an air conditioner in the house.

It is a great place to live in the La Mésange project throughout the year, while taking advantage of the sun, an inexhaustible natural resource, which provides both well-being and energy efficiency.

This is what Biophile offers its customers through its La Mésange project, a contemporary and ecological home in the heart of nature, reflecting current values and within a vibrant and dynamic community.

Who does not dream of settling in teleworking mode in the heart of nature, far from the noise, smog and traffic jams of the city? Opting for this living environment means choosing to live in a peaceful, healthy and safe environment that promotes the discovery of biodiversity, fauna and flora, forges a close link with nature and creates a commitment to the protection of this natural environment for future generations.

What would it be like to work in this dream environment? Waking up to the sound of singing birds in a space bathed in natural light, having a meal on the terrace among the trees while observing the flora and fauna, breathing the fresh air while going to stretch your legs on the trails, taking the time to have a moment of yoga or meditation in a comfortable, bright and large space for a health break, letting the children play in the courtyard to discover nature’s treasure, then participating in a social activity organized by the residents of the domain. A real invitation to experience simple pleasures and pure happiness, not to mention the possibility of enjoying, over the seasons, a host of outdoor activities integrated into the domain!

The La Mésange project also offers a living and working environment equal to what today’s architecture can offer its occupants: an open, bright and inviting living space. But, in addition to its elegance, its noble materials, its impressive cathedral ceiling and its incredible location, it stands out for all of its ecological characteristics, providing an inspiring response to current environmental issues through more energy-efficient and responsible choices.
